1. Jess Portrait by EHatherly_2023.jpg

Jess Holdengarde (b.1991) is a South African lens-based artist living and working in Glasgow. Her practice utilises the natural environment to explore an embodied understanding of the role of analogue practices in an ecological crisis. Her work is an attempt to offer her audience a nexus of glimpses of the future of art making in a changing ecological, political and social climate.

Jess’s current research is focused on experimenting with alternative processes that use locally foraged plants to make natural chemistry. She forages particular plant matter that has a specific phenolic compound that is a developing agent for silver halides and therefore can process and develop light sensitive materials.
